Surprise Body Clipping

Surprise!  I did some clipping today:

It's like he knew I was taking a picture of it or something.

I didn't really plan on this, but he's taking longer to cool out and I figured my newly sharpened light-duty not-body-clippers could handle this.  They did, and it only took about 15 minutes.  We'll have another go-round and more hair removed after I've bought a blade for my trainer's Andis (putting off my own body clipper purchase due to current broke-ness).

He's such a good boy for clipping - he dozes, mostly, and today he fell sound asleep with his chin on my head.  Maybe I shouldn't have let that happen, but there are far worse vices for clipping than being perfectly still for the duration of a clip because he fell asleep on my head.

This needs a caption bubble.

He's got one foreleg back making it appear uneven here, but let me tell you, that is a damn good freehand clip job, if I do say so myself.  I am not a good clipper, so the fact that this turned out okay is somewhat surprising.

I am a little sad to think that I'll be shaving that gorgeous red winter coat in exchange for the mousy clipped-Chestnut color, but that's a silly thing to be sad about when it means he'll be comfortable this winter.

The Amigo has survived 48 hours of turnout and counting unscathed so far (although his pasture mate already has some, erm, "unintended ventilation" already...)

    1. You have to with these wooly mammoths! It's either that or not ride for six straight months.

  2. The Amigo's are generally good rugs, I had one for Sunny and it lasted 2 years never needing any repairs, has been sold and is probably still going but I saw a gorgeous purple one so replaced it (said purple one has now been ripped to pieces...)

    1. Good to know, thanks for the vote of confidence! Sorry to hear about the purple rug, I've done the same thing - pretty does not = strong!

  3. neat job, but he's soooo handsome no matter what you do! WHen are you going to take off the whole lot? I'm sorely tempted to give both of mine a bib clip, they are sweating a lot but there's a cold winter ahead of us and they'll be out all the time.

    1. Thanks! I'm not sure, probably early November and again in December. Usually I clip on Election Day (1st Tuesday in November) here in the US because I have the day off as a government employee, but there's no election this year in our county! I'm nervous about the winter like you are and I've never full-clipped before, so I'm sort of dragging my feet...

  4. Nice job Jen! I am after my daughter to clip Riva - weather is changing fast here.

    1. Tell her to get it done tomorrow if your weather is like ours! It's going to be 65 today and tomorrow and then unseasonably cold the rest of the week with SNOW on Thursday! I decided I wanted to get at least some of the hair off while I could still feel my hands.

  5. I'm breaking out my big body clippers for an early Shave-a-Pony Day. I normally holdoff until after Breeders Cup, but we're still trending daytime temps in the upper 70s and lower 80s, which means unless i ride when it's hot and risk Mitch and Jet all sweaty, I have to ride just before dusk and can't risk them getting damp and cold.

I'm hoping with the big body clippers, I can get it all done much faster today.

Mitch has such a lovely red coat too, but I admit, he turns a gorgeous peaches-and-cream when he gets shaved. I'm already weeping about losing my girl's pretty pretty blackness to gunmetal gray.

    1. You have voiced all of my concerns exactly, I'm in the same boat as an 8-5'er. I'm interested to hear what your experience with the big body clippers is, I'm borrowing my trainers this year but am hoping to buy a really good pair for next year.

Peaches-and-cream is a good name for that color! I've never clipped a black horse before, interesting that she turns that color.

    2. I decided that since it's trending this year, he's not peaches and cream. He's pumpkin spice latte with whipped cream on top.

I bought my Sunbeam Stewarts off eBay for $44.03 +$20 shipping. They're old workhorse clippers, but man did they do the job today.

  6. That is a very good freehand job! I'm hoping to get away with doing a trace clip this year.

  7. Yay clipping! I'm going to pull the trigger on that pretty quickly here.

  8. If you want him to have better color after his body clip, do a hot oil treatment. Helps tremendously.
