A Conversation

Me: "My lesson got snowed out Thursday, and it's probably going to get snowed out today, 3-5 more inches of snow today.  I'm so over this crazy hard winter!"

Nick: "Why don't you trade your Fit in for a truck so you could get to the barn in the winter?"

Clearly he didn't think that through, because any seasoned horse husband knows that first comes truck, then comes trailer!

(I am not planning on trading in my paid-off daily driver for a truck.)

(This is seriously the most exciting horse-related thing I have to blog about.)

Dreaming of green things...but not dreaming of this wild mane!  One good thing about winter, it is well and truly tamed back over thanks to the hood he's had to wear most of the winter!

  1. Well I own a truck but it is a 2WD - and hence parked for the winter! So you could both own a truck AND not be able to get to the barn? But I hear you. We are back down to single digits next week, so no riding for me.

How do you like the Fit overall? I've had my eye on them for years as my next daily driver.

    1. Something I hadn't considered...must be 4WD in this part of the country!

I love the Fit overall. I've had mine for 3 years and it averages 33-35 MPG combined city/highway, 75k miles with no major repairs (knock on wood!). I got the manual, I like driving sticks and I didn't like test driving the automatic - it felt like that tiny little engine had to think about it before responding when I put my foot down on the accelerator.

About my only complaint is that it's really bare bones - no Bluetooth and cruise is not standard. But fold flat seats and a hatchback are great for the equestrian without a truck.

    2. Well, I probably shouldn't have a 2WD in Vermont, either, but it's done well for me so far and it was the deal of a century so I love it nonetheless!

That's good to hear about the Fit. I am not really a car person and can't drive stick. I drive my boyfriend's Prius without any angst so I am used to the late pickup feeling and it doesn't bother me. I like them for design and reliability and the cargo space aspect. Anything after my current poor little much-abused Geo Prizm will feel like luxury, I think. Thank you!

    3. Amanda- You might consider a Mazda 3. I have the hatchback and I love it! :) My Grandparents used to own a Fit and it was a great car for them.

  2. I would love to have something that doesn't guzzle gas but I needed both a people mover and something to pull a trailer so I have an Expedition. I do really like it especially when the roads get bad but my wallet no so much!

    1. I've thought about doing the same thing. When we can finally afford a trailer, I just have to sit down and do some math on all of the options. I know some of the newer trucks with the cylinder shutoff technology do get some good gas mileage compared to older trucks.

  3. I thought that was a Fit in the picture you posted. My sister has one of her own. She loves it.
For us my parents bought the truck and I am paying for the trailer. It is defintely nice to have a drive around so you can park the truck. We use it in deep snow though since it has 4wd.

    1. I remember your truck and trailer from that day you picked up Manny and Rosemary. It's so nice, you're incredibly lucky. That's the first time I'd seen a walkthrough like that and I've been obsessed with them ever since, although my first trailer will likely just be whatever gets him from point A to point B. Someday, though!

    2. I LOVE my trailer, but I totally cried when I signed on the dotted line. It was my second biggest purchase in my life. Worth it though.
We wondered if the truck and trailer would be in one piece when we got back to Lisa's after seeing Ffame. She told us a story on the drive about the ponies wreaking havoc on a workmans truck before. That was such a surreal day for me.

    1. Tooooooooooootally. I would be lying if I said I didn't keep tabs on trailer prices in this area.

    2. You are not alone. Craigslist is actually your friend in this instance. I found Katherine's trailer there and dealerships were asking 2-3K more for trailers that were 2-3 years older in the same model. My goal is to have a truck and trailer in the next 5 years but realistically by 30 might be more of a possibility. We shall see.

  5. It's definitely not worth traidining your Fit in on...but I love having access to a truck! I'm lucky my parents have one for our farm, and I probably drive it the most. It's nice to have a truck when you need it, and definitely get 4wd.
