Permanent Pony

When did the reality of owning your own horse set in for you?

Since I've had two horses in the past that were mine in a transient sense, it's still hard for me to see Contender as a permanent part of my life.  I'm overjoyed that he's mine, and making all kinds of plans for the future, but to have a horse that is mine...it's strange.  Knowing he's not just a project and he won't be sold out from under me is a new feeling for me, and I'm so happy to look forward to the adventures we'll have on the journey we're on.

It didn't hit me until Christmas morning, when I unwrapped this gift from my mom:

Practically speaking, it's a halter plate with information on it that I already know, but in a purely emotional sense, it means so much more than that.  It's a promise and an official statement that this horse is going to be with me long enough to warrant his own hardware.

  1. That is awesome! I had a similar feeling when I ordered a halter plate for my horse when I bought him four years ago. Leasing horses just isn't the same. Isn't it a great feeling to be the "owner" on the tag?
