Turnout

One of the things I love about my barn is that it is one part show barn, one part totally casual, and all about letting the horses be horses.  Everyone gets at least 10-12 hours of turnout per day, with sometimes a full day of turnout after an event, and I think that's a big factor in our low injury rates.  Connor and his buddy have been on 24 hour turnout since April for a couple of reasons, and so when I fed him in a stall this morning because it just worked with my morning routine, he was very confused.

Excuse me, is that a treat you've got there?

Ponies must be free!  Let me out!

Reality sets in.  Again.

  2. Haha. That first photo is so cute! I completely agree with horses getting tunr out. It gets a bit muddy in Western Oregon in the winter, but those horses just need to be out! :)

    1. We only have a lot of mud in the spring, but it's almost worse to deal with, I think. But like you said, it's worth it for turnout!

  3. So cute! I love hearing that your horses get turned out! It is so good for them. I always feel bad for the horses that have to stay in because they are show horses.

    1. Me too, I am amazed and a little sad when I see like park horses with the tails so long that they have to stay in with tail wraps all the time. I don't know how they do it.

    2. We had a reining horse at my old barn, she could never go out because she might get injured and not be worth as much. So sad.

    1. Haha! I guess turnout is probably not the greatest in a place with land values like southern California! What's your turnout like?

  6. I am very, very lucky, because my horse has 24/7 turnout. He would not be happy in a stall and it is not good for his allergies. I do pay quite a lot for his upkeep though. No free lunches here.

Your barn sounds like a good mix.
