Polo Breastplate

The picture below was obviously taken when Connor was not yet fuzzy and there was still daylight somewhere in this godforsaken world:

Fake Pinterest, makes me laugh more than anything else on Twitter.

This elastic polo breastplate did not work for Connor at all.  It's horse sized, but it was way too small across the chest (couldn't even get it buckled) and way too long over his short withers.

My trainer said that due to his anatomy and the style of my girth, this style of breastplate just might not work for him.  Sad, because it's my favorite style.  Maybe I just need to get used to them, but I think the ever-popular-with-eventers 5 point breastplates look busy, and seem oddly placed on the shoulder.

So #1: What style of breastplate do you use? Polo, jumper, 3pt, 4pt, 5pt?  Why did you choose it?  'To be stylish' is a perfectly acceptable answer.
And #2: Anyone want to buy that breastplate from me for $20 + shipping?

  1. #1 - I use a Jumper breastplate because it was cheap old one from some lady at the barn and I needed something right now and didn't want to spend a bajillion dollars (even though I really want an Antares one...)

    1. Totally understand. The Antares/CWD/Southern Stars/whatevers in the $200-300 price range are gorgeous.

  2. go for the new nunn finer 3-point. it's the best design! i have the 5-point, and i don't love it. wish i had a reason to trade for the 3-point! (also, the PS of Sweden breastcollar is pretty awesome, too!)

    1. I'm looking into the NF - didn't know PS of Sweden had them, will have to look into that! Thanks!

  3. #1- I have a CWD 3 pt and I love it. It doesn't get too tight or too loose. Though I use mine for a pretty grab strap primarily as opposed to keep my saddle where it needs to be. i used to use a nunn finer hunting breastplate but it didn't stay still enough to do what I wanted really.

I love the way The 3 point attaches at the girth and the billets. Like a 5 point but no pommel attachment so not as busy. :)

    1. I like the grab strap aspect of it for sure, and obviously would love a CWD anything. That 3 pt really is gorgeous, I'll ask Mary about it. Thanks!

  4. I used a 5 point a couple times and just could never get into it. I like a basic 3 point elastic, with or without the top neck strap. Which is why I have three of them... But the PS of Sweden one is kinda interesting to me too, if you need more side to side stability.

  5. I had a 5 point for awhile. It was a pain in the ass to get actually adjusted, but did surprisingly adjust to fit His Highness very well. Cleaning it was another pain in the ass. However, it did the job and was a great grab strap for me, and worked perfectly to keep my jumping saddle from slipping back, even on ridiculously steep hills or big jumps (back in the day...).

  6. I have a 5 point because I received it as payment for teaching some riding lessons. (Thanks?) I think it's weirdly placed on the shoulder, too. It barely fits Gina (who is narrow), doesn't fit Moe (who is short and narrow), and fits well on Freddie (who is medium-sized). The one I have seems to be designed for some hulking draft cross, even though it's a 'horse' size.

  7. I like the elastic 3 point, but am curious about the polo style ones. Not sure how it would look on 'ol Simon!

  8. I have this one here https://www.horseloverz.com/product/martingalesandbreastcollars/190764-toryleather58bridleleatherflathuntbreastplate.html?sku=5-170296&gdftrk=gdfV27555_a_7c1161_a_7c2883_a_7c5_d_170296&ev_pid=5-170296&ev_ppid=77191319530&ev_adtype=pla&ev_cmpg=Shopping&gclid=CMqM35Co58ECFTKCMgodRkEAoQ that is very adjustable and easy to take on and off with the snap. I even added extra snaps for attaching to my D savers. Great quality for the price too.

  9. I was using a 5 point but I just find it too bulky. I just got a CWD 3 point and it's by far my favorite. That being said, I use the polo style (Tory Leather) for dressage - I think it's super elegant!

  10. I have the Nunn Finer Jumper breastplate from Bit of Britain because it is Jim Wofford's recommended breastplate type and if Jimmy likes it, it must be good!

  11. I like the idea of the 5 point, but yes they are quite busy looking, nunnfiner has a hunt-style one that has cleaner lines that I would like to get, also the 3point (or bridge so it isn't confused with a regular 3 point) is my new favorite...now to find one I can afford!

  13. Flat hunt breastplate, for... hunting, lol. I actually never used a breastplate when eventing. My saddle never moved, so I never felt the need for one. I did try a 5 point for Paddy, but it was just too busy on him. Sprinklerbandit's got it now and it looks fab on Courage!

  14. I have an elastic three point and it fits my cob type horse really well. I like the 5 point breastplates but there are some really cool ones on the market that I really need to find a link too for you. Similar to the polo breastplate but different. I WILL find one for you!

  15. I have a polo breastplate, two Edgewood three points (really gotta sell one of those), and a standing martingale all in my regular rotation. Honestly, the only reason for the polo breastplate is the convenient handle when my baby horse has one of his "omg a fly looked at me so I must buck!!" moments.

  16. I have a Nunn Finer 3 point hunting breastplate. It was a gift, and I actually REALLY like it. Tristan is definitely more comfortable when we're out trail riding, as it keeps the saddle from slipping. It gives me something to hook my fingers into. It looks stylish. I actually kind of like the look of the 5 points, but the 3 point is definitely less cluttered and still does the job.

  17. I have an elastic jumper type 3 point I use. I tried multiple ones and it was the only thing that I could get adjusted properly around that big chest that didn't end up being too big elsewhere.

  18. i don't actually have a breastplate (still accumulating my eventing gear), so uh,, what are the measurements on that one again (that is, if it's still available)? :)

    1. Around the chest (the elastic part) it's approximately 48 inches when on the largest hole and 39 inches on the smallest hole, so that would be measuring from the girth on one side to the girth on the other. The neck strap would fit anything, if it had fit in the chest I'd just have punched holes in it. Let me know if you're interested and I'll sell it for what I paid for it, $20 plus shipping. Thanks!

    2. great thanks! consider me tentatively interested, barring measurements of Isabel's shoulders tomorrow :)

    3. You are still first choice, but could you let me know if you are interested by Friday night or early Saturday morning? There is a charity tack sale starting Saturday at noon and I'd love to sell it there if you don't want it. Thanks!

    4. ok - finally measured the mare (with the measuring tape of dooooom, according to her), and it looks like it'll fit. if the breast plate is still available, please let me know how you'd like to proceed!

    5. WEIRD we posted that at virtually the same moment! Email me at my spam address, jalean11 @ gmail dot com, and we'll work out details. Thanks!

  19. I absolutely love the clean look of the polo breastplate but I think they hit the horse at such a weird place that it cant be comfortable. I have been debating one just to see if it works but Ive been using a 5 way for a few years now because they actually work. A hunter breastplate in my experience hasnt done the job of keeping the saddle in place. And the 5 way IMO distributes weight a bit better.
