C-c-c-c-old Show

I shared the weather forecast for my show this weekend with JenJ this morning, and she told me to move to Texas.

At least the big snowstorm is holding off until Sunday night.

It's a February show, you win some, you lose some in terms of weather.  At least the roads will be clear so we can go at all, and at least I didn't enter for the Saturday show, when the high is 14.

I'm not too worried.  My Underarmour 4.0 will get me through it, the show is indoors, there's a heated viewing lounge, and we paid the extra $10 for the nice barn.  I am considering showing in my (brand new, since I lost my first pair, so they still look good) SSG 10 Below gloves, cause I think I should prioritize not letting my hands freeze and losing my finger dexterity.

I mean, they're black at least.

I did finally cave and buy my favorite heated insoles.  I had gotten away without buying a box this winter so far, but...yeah.  That ends with a 5 degree show.

Don't mess around with toe warmers, full foot heated insoles are where it's at.  Also don't mess around with sticking them to the bottom of your socks and hoping they stay in place when you shove your foot in your boot.  Stick them to the bottom of the boot's footbed instead.  #protip

What's the coldest weather you've ever shown in?

  1. Eek! That's pretty chilly! I've only shown in the summer and early fall, so I think the coldest for me was only like 50 or 60 lol

  2. I've never shown in cold weather but I did clinic with Dom Schramm in 20 degree weather. We were inside, but the arena wasn't heated, and there was a lot of standing around. It got pretty miserable.

  3. I have the SSG 10 below gloves. They're pretty good, a little too bulky but they get the job done. This Sunday the high is 16 here, and that is the day I am jumping with Jennie Brannigan. This weekend will be the coldest weather I've ever ridden in my life. It will be in an indoor, but still. By next week it will be back to the mid 40's and next weekend will be 51! Crap luck that the clinic isn't a week from this Saturday!

  4. I remember one show in IHSA where people were actually jealous of me having a huge paper coming due, because I had brought my laptop and it was doing an admirable job of making sure my legs didn't freeze. That was a cold show.

I'd show in the SSGs. It's a schooling show. Whatever. Take a sharpie and color in the white bits if you're worried about nice photos. It's not like you aren't used to riding in their bulky crappiness anyway. Plus, if you're like me they help you keep your hands super still ... or else you'll drop the reins. ;)

  6. Foxhunting in similar temps. After a few hours I'd lose feeling in my feet, not a huge deal till it's time to jump down out of the saddle, then ouch! Good luck and stay warm!

  8. so the high temp for our show on sunday is 19*.... and i'm starting to worry that they will cancel it since the only warm up area is outdoors and will very likely be frozen solid :'( please cross your fingers that this isn't the case!!!

and in the meantime i'll cross mine that all your heat gear keeps you feeling good and ready for your tests!!

  9. You're crazy. I'd stay at home under the blankets, in front of a roaring fire. With cats on my toes for extra warmth.

This is probably not the time that our show on Saturday will be 76 and sunny, right?

  10. Uuuuuhhhhhhh yeah no way in hell. Nope. That's called "there are other shows and I don't want it that bad". There's tough and then there's what is the freaking point.

But hey! Maybe that's a warm day in Indiana?

  11. I've shown in the teens before, in college for IHSA. Really not my favorite, especially with all the standing around at an IHSA show!

  12. That is SO cold, we have a show this Sunday and the weather is going to be in the 70s, I'm worried it's going to be too warm because both horses are lazy and it's nice to have a bit of bite in the air to keep them going.

Good luck! Hopefully you guys don't freeze!

  13. Brrrrr that's definitely colder than any show I've ever been to. I think I showed once in late April in Michigan and it was probably 30 degrees for the first test ridden but it warmed to a pretty balmy 45 by midday...

  14. Those heated insoles are awesome. I don't even need them and I want some. I used to play polo in college in NY and the temps would be below zero. The barn doors would literally freeze shut and we'd have to all get together to knock them free and slide them open. I remember times where we'd wrap ourselves in coolers in between chukkers (quarters).

Now I'm CA and it's like 70 degrees and T-shirt weather in February.

  17. I am just not that brave...coldest would be March Heartland shows at Edinburgh - always a crap shoot with March temps in IN. Have a wonderful time - kick some Fist Level butt - can't wait to see pics and hear all about it!!! Also, cannot believe you have not broke out the foot warmers until now.

  18. I could not. I only show in the summer/fall so I don't worry about coldness
