Go Home Winter, We're All Sick of You

Things have been quiet around here lately because we are deep into the worst month of the year: February.

My brain where horses are concerned is a mishmash of "Can I pull my brain off of work long enough to ride?" and "I'm so tired of it taking 15 minutes to get dressed in my 17 layers" and "But champions are made in the offseason."

Wet bird still gets his baths in winter, just with the space heater turned up!

I'm not sweating it.  Connor is feeling a little burnt out on Dressage lately after feeling amazing for most of January (my fault, definitely), so a break is good.  I'm still out there almost every day, I'm just not putting a solid ride on him every time.

As for me, I'm celebrating the home stretch of winter by getting the heck out of the Midwest thanks to work.  Five days in the Bay Area this week, followed by a (really) quick Denver trip the following week, followed by five days in Vegas the first week of March.  A break followed by lots of trainer rides while I escape to some relative warmth sounds like just like what we both need to survive the last few crappy weeks of winter.

  1. It's killing me. Between being buried under work and angry at the weather, I've definitely been slacking on my riding. Counting down the days until March...

  2. Dude, I am right there with you! I'm headed out west this week too and I'm looking forward to the break. Just wake me up when spring comes along, okay?

  3. I'm still thinking of winter in terms of months, not weeks. Sigh. But it's good to hear that spring is around the corner for you!

  5. My brain keeps trying to skip February and I think we're solidly in March until I look at a calendar. And then I'm SUPER disappointed.

  7. Travelling somewhere warm sure helps beat winter! I'm heading on a trip for the first time in a few years - looking forward to no snow and some warmth!

  8. It's funny you mention the layers... I think the dog is really getting sick of the extra 10 min it takes us to put on our fur so he can go out.

  9. When I was a solely H/J rider up in NY, we had a super small indoor arena... As a result, February was renamed "hate your pony month" because we would all go a bit stir crazy.

  12. Those are my sentiments exactly. SO many layers, work is so busy, and IT'S dark when I get to the barn no matter what time I leave work (or so it feels). So we're not going to be champions this year, that's for sure.

And we didn't have an arena from Dec 26-Feb 17 as my BO put in footing about 8" deep so..... yeah, no riding. I rode Sunday and was ecstatic we got to trot!
