Product Review: Noel Asmar Tory Technical Shirt (and some Riding Warehouse Weirdness)

This shirt.  I almost never pay full price for anything, and when I do, it's never EVER for shirts.  Shirts are always on sale, full price is for suckas.

But from the second I saw this shirt, I was in love. I gave myself a cool down period before I would let myself purchase it, because it costs more than any pair of breeches I have ever bought in my life (except the Gho Dho's I stress-bought the week before the KPG clinic!).

Over the next couple of weeks, I kept finding myself thinking about it.  Then, while standing dejectedly in the barn aisle immediately after the failed CWD fitting a month ago, I pulled the trigger on the shirt as a consolation birthday present to myself.  "Congratulations on not spending [mumble mumble] thousand dollars on yourself today, self, that $85 shirt you want is a lot less expensive than a saddle isn't it?"  #geniuslogic

My favorite color and my favorite shade of that color

...and then it got here and was too big.  I saw that SmartPak had the same shirt in an XXS, so I emailed RW to say, "Hey, the XS was too big, SmartPak carries an XXS that you don't carry and I'd rather order it from you, can you special order it for me?"

Here's where it got weird.  They "checked with the manufacturer" and told me Noel Asmar didn't make that shirt in plum and XXS.  Not "It exists but we can't get it for you", but "It doesn't exist"  Uh...okay, but clearly it DOES exist because SmartPak carries it...?

(Side note: This is the second time in a month I've noticed RW not carrying the smallest size available in a particular shirt, which is going to seriously limit me buying apparel from them if that's A Thing now.  I sure hope not.)

So I returned the XS to RW and ordered it in XXS from SmartPak for $30 more than I paid RW for it, because I was committed after trying it on - it was gorgeous.  I had no idea whether SmartPak would come through or not.  But they did.  And it was worth the wait.

Back of the collar detail

This shirt looks so good on, even my husband loves it.  He has strong opinions about fashion and hates most horse attire, so that's really saying something.  When I asked what he liked about it, he said "the fit, and the high collar, it's very unusual and striking.  There are so few equestrian shirts that look good, but that's one of them."  I've even worn it to a date night!

I've worn it to ride three times so far, and have found that there's a very narrow range of temperatures at which this shirt is comfortable.  I was a smidge warm in it at 65 degrees, so this is definitely not a sunshirt.  I was comfortable riding in the indoor in the low 50s, but needed something windproof over it when I hacked outside in the breezy 50 degree sunshine.

You're also not going to get anything to fit underneath it: the forearms are borderline too tight on me.  A vest will look great with it and extend its useful temperature range a bit, but still, this is definitely a 2-season shirt.  If that.

It has a cell phone pocket in the back that's more than big enough to fit my Samsung Galaxy S10 in, and there's a reflective strip around it for visibility.  Be aware that this is more of a "trail ride" feature though, since when I started to do sitting trot and canter, the phone started flapping around back there, slamming into my lower back and untucking the shirt.

It washes great too.  I washed it on my washer's Hand Wash setting (like I do all my darks) and air dried it, although it does say it's tumble dry low safe.  I'm paranoid, and too in love with this shirt to risk ruining it (or making the forearms even tighter).

Finally - the plot thickens around the sizing.  SmartPak no longer has the plum/XXS available, and Noel Asmar's website also only shows the blue and black in XXS.  But I swear it exists, look!

(Note that it's just generally designed to fit tight.  If you size up to get it more baggy, you may find it too wide in the shoulders.  YMMV, but my fit issues with the XS were entirely shoulder-related).

Bottom line: This shirt is expensive, impractical, isn't going to fit you if you have normal sized adult forearms, and is only comfortable within like a 10 degree temperature window, but IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.  Also it's husband approved.

  1. It's likely that Asmar only had a certain number made in that size/colorway, and once they were all sold to retailers, that was it, no more left in the warehouse. It happens, and if the manufacturer doesn't have anymore on order, then yeah... I can see the rep telling RW that that size/color isn't an option.

    1. Still though, her exact words to me were "NA doesn't make it in that color and size," not "We can't get any in that color and size." Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but it struck me as weird.

    2. Who knows what was said from the asmar warehouse to the rep to the person (or people) at RW or what got lost in translation along the way. I can see how it could be misinterpreted or misunderstood. Annoying for sure, but I can see lots of ways the wrong information could have gotten to you and been a completely innocent mistake.

  2. Actually this review makes me feel better about not getting one. The pictures on you look a little on the reddish side of purple for me. It's gorgeous tho and it fits you fabulously.

    1. Ok here's the deal, I think you like cool purples and I like warm purples and we just need to mutually agree to keep an eye out for each others' purples and then we're going to add all kinds of purple stuff to our collections. Deal?! Haha

  5. That shirt looks great on you.

I always think their sustainable tees look nice but I did this crazy exchange two times for different sizes thing with RW - first the medium and the large were almost the same size (and not my size) then someone measured for me and sent me one that was different and it fit so weirdly short in the body on my shorter torso. Plus I was unsure how anyone could wear it in the summer with the thickness of it. The clothing looks beautiful but I've given up.

    1. Especially in light of how weird the sizing was on this one, that makes me feel better. That's actually why I took the time to review it on SmartPak's website too, because the sizing is so strange and I wanted to hopefully help someone avoid doing the return dance. This shirt seems like it was made for someone with model proportions.

  6. My favorite is your take-away at the end. Basically big waste of money but zero regrets! Kind of my life motto. It looks great on you, and I'm glad you love it!

    1. Haha! Glad I have a kindred spirit on that one. I've done this with two beautiful riding shirts lately and it's so not like me!

  7. I love that - it looks fantastic on you. I'm kind of a fan of the brand in general - I have a show shirt and a couple of jackets I wear to work and get all kinds of compliments on. It's nice to have things I don't have to limit to the barn.

  8. It looks beautiful on you! Sometimes you just gotta buy the shirt you want cuz it makes you happy for no real reason! Asmar stuff is really pretty, I would buy their entire line if I had all the monies.

Romfh has something sorta similar, that I actually rode in this morning. It's probably a bit thicker, I use it over my sunshirts in the winter mornings (it was 50ish when I got on this morning) and I was unzipping the by the time I was done with my ride. It's not quite as fitted around the waist, but it has a nice high collar with the tiniest bit of furry lining right at the top. The pictures here don't do it justice https://www.romfh.com/shirts/romfh-aachen-mock-zip-470086 I have the purple one and would def buy another.

    1. I ended up seeing that shirt in person last weekend at the Royal, and it's gorgeous! If I hadn't bought this one already I'd consider it.
